May 5 Fire Wire

Happy Monday, Fultonvale!

We’re kicking off another exciting week at Fultonvale with Bus Driver Appreciation Day—a heartfelt thank you to our incredible drivers who ensure our students travel safely to and from school each day. Your care and commitment do not go unnoticed!

This week also marks Canadian Mental Health Week (May 5–11), with the theme “Unmasking Mental Health.” Throughout the week, we’ll be engaging students in daily activities that highlight the importance of mental wellness and the power of open, supportive conversations. You’ll find these themes reflected in our Week-at-a-Glance.

It's a great week for a great week!

Be sure to check out the updates and opportunities below for important information on upcoming events, student supports, and ways to stay involved in our Fultonvale community.

School Council AGM - Open Positions

Exciting News! Our AGM is coming up on May 20, 2025, and we have two important positions up for election!

We’re looking for dedicated individuals to step into the roles of:

  • Chair
  • Secretary/Recorder

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, make a difference, and help shape the future of our school community! If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to reach out to me ahead of time.

Important: To be elected, you must be present at the meeting on May 20.

Let’s build something great together!

Join Our Fundraising Council – We’re Looking for Board Members!

Are you passionate about making a difference in our community? We’re seeking dedicated individuals to join Fultonvale School Advisory Council and help drive impactful change! We’re currently looking for a President, Secretary, and Treasurer to provide leadership, oversight, and strategic guidance for our fundraising efforts.

Positions Available:

  • President: Lead the council, provide direction and vision for fundraising activities, and represent the organization at events.
  • Secretary: Manage meeting notes, maintain records, and ensure communication within the council.
  • Treasurer: Oversee financial records, manage budgets, and ensure financial transparency.

We meet every other month for 30-45 minutes.

Without volunteers to fill these positions, the Fultonvale School Advisory Council (FSAC) may be forced to dissolve. This would mean the loss of Hot Lunches, the Welcome Back BBQ, Provided Lunches, and valuable funding that directly supports our school.

If you're interested in stepping up, please email ftvhotlunch@gmail.com. Elections will take place at our AGM on May 20, and you must be present to be voted in.

A proposed bylaw change has also been brought forward and will be voted on at the AGM. For more details please review last week's Fire Wire article HERE

Your support makes a difference—let’s keep these important programs going for our students!

OPPORTUNITY

Class Placements

With registrations and the upcoming school year on our minds, we'd like to share information on how we determine classroom placements.

Our teachers collaborate with the administration and counsellor to develop balanced class lists as a team which consider several factors such as academic needs, behavioural needs, friendship/social groupings, access to support staff, matching personalities between teacher/student and a balance of genders. Teachers submit a checklist with each draft class list that addresses these considerations, including ensuring at least one friend for each student. As you can imagine, creating class lists is a complicated task.

It is our goal to create balanced classes that provide an excellent educational experience for each child. We appreciate your trust in our professionalism and our desire to do right by all students while balancing the various needs of each family. It is for that reason that we do not entertain requests for classroom placements. If there is an extenuating circumstance that will have a significant impact on your child or family that you feel we need to consider, you can share that information in writing via email to the principal, Jennifer Ference, by May 15, 2025.

Hot Lunch

Upcoming Hot Lunches & Order Deadlines:

  • Thursday, May 8 – Tim Hortons (Order by Saturday, May 3)
  • Wednesday, May 14 – Panago & Confetti Sweets (Order by Friday, May 9)
  • Thursday, May 22 – Boston Pizza (Order by Saturday, May 17)
  • Wednesday, May 28 – Subway & Jugo Juice (Order by Friday, May 23)
  • Thursday, June 5 (Tentative) – McDonald’s (Order by Saturday, May 31)
    • Note: This lunch is tentative as it may conflict with the Track & Field rainout date. If the event is rescheduled to this day, Healthy Hunger will issue full refunds to all who ordered.

Important Reminders:

As we head into field trip season, please double-check your child(ren)’s schedules before placing lunch orders in advance.

Please log into your Healthy Hunger account to confirm your orders. We’ve had a number of students looking for lunches that weren’t ordered—we don’t want anyone disappointed!

Lunch Pickup for Siblings:
If you need your child’s lunch sent home with a sibling, please email Carrie at ceckersley78@gmail.com the day before, or by 9:00 AM on the day of hot lunch.
To help our volunteers manage lunch distribution efficiently, we ask that students do not come to the concession room looking for a sibling’s lunch. Carrie will ensure it’s delivered to the appropriate classroom to be taken home.

Thank you for your continued support of our hot lunch program and fundraising efforts.

Numeracy at Home - Preparing for PATs

“It is important that children feel relaxed and comfortable when they write any test, including provincial achievement tests (PATs). Children’s feelings about a test are very much influenced by what adults close to them say about those tests. Parents can be of most help to their children by encouraging them to relax and do their best, just as they would when writing any test.”
