Happy Monday!

We have so much to celebrate at Fultonvale!

Last week, we recognized Mrs. Maroziuk for her 25 years of teaching with Elk Island Public Schools. We are so grateful for her care, passion, and commitment to student learning.

A big congratulations to our Grades 4–6 relay teams who competed at the elementary track meet on Thursday! Thank you to Mrs. Vasseur, Mrs. Seib, and Mrs. Vicic for dedicating many after-school hours to coaching and preparing our teams.

Thank you as well to our junior high staff for hosting a fantastic track meet. Despite the chilly weather, our students showed great resilience and spirit. Congratulations to all athletes who qualified for the EIPS Track and Field Day on May 27!

Looking ahead, we have a lot of great things happening this week:

ACTION

Class Placements

With registrations and the upcoming school year on our minds, we'd like to share information on how we determine classroom placements.

Our teachers collaborate with the administration and counsellor to develop balanced class lists as a team which consider several factors such as academic needs, behavioural needs, friendship/social groupings, access to support staff, matching personalities between teacher/student and a balance of genders. Teachers submit a checklist with each draft class list that addresses these considerations, including ensuring at least one friend for each student. As you can imagine, creating class lists is a complicated task.

It is our goal to create balanced classes that provide an excellent educational experience for each child. We appreciate your trust in our professionalism and our desire to do right by all students while balancing the various needs of each family. It is for that reason that we do not entertain requests for classroom placements. If there is an extenuating circumstance that will have a significant impact on your child or family that you feel we need to consider, you can share that information in writing via email to the principal, Jennifer Ference, by May 15, 2025.

Upcoming Hot Lunches & Order Deadlines:

  • Wednesday, May 14 – Panago & Confetti Sweets (Order by Friday, May 9)
  • Thursday, May 22 – Boston Pizza (Order by Saturday, May 17)
  • Wednesday, May 28 – Subway & Jugo Juice (Order by Friday, May 23)

    • Note: This lunch is tentative as it may conflict with the Track & Field rainout date. If the event is rescheduled to this day, Healthy Hunger will issue full refunds to all who ordered.

Important Reminders:

As we head into field trip season, please double-check your child(ren)’s schedules before placing lunch orders in advance.

Please log into your Healthy Hunger account to confirm your orders. We’ve had a number of students looking for lunches that weren’t ordered—we don’t want anyone disappointed!

Lunch Pickup for Siblings:
If you need your child’s lunch sent home with a sibling, please email Carrie at ceckersley78@gmail.com the day before, or by 9:00 AM on the day of hot lunch.
To help our volunteers manage lunch distribution efficiently, we ask that students do not come to the concession room looking for a sibling’s lunch. Carrie will ensure it’s delivered to the appropriate classroom to be taken home.

Thank you for your continued support of our hot lunch program and fundraising efforts.

Each day at Fultonvale, our amazing staff demonstrate Heart, Excellence, Attitude, and Teamwork, truly living out what it means to Feel the H.E.A.T. Their efforts leave lasting impacts on students and our school community, often in ways they may never even realize.

Let's take the time to celebrate them! If a staff member has made a positive difference for your child or family, we encourage you to share your appreciation. A few kind words can go a long way in brightening someone's day.

Submit a Staff Recognition Form here.

Thank you for helping us recognize the outstanding team that makes Fultonvale such a special place!

INFORMATION

Wild Fire Protocols

Spring has started out as a very dry season and unfortunately, we’re seeing grassfires in nearby areas. Although we haven’t had fires close to the school to date, circumstances can shift quickly and we need to be prepared to deal with the situation should it arise.

We understand parents and caregivers have concerns about students’ health and wellbeing due to the unpredictability of wildfires, and I wanted to reach out to let you know about the contingency plans we have in place.

  • To keep air quality at healthy levels, air intake system is adjusted as needed to avoid bringing smoke into the building. When the air quality is poor outside, school administrators will initiate a “shelter in place” and keep students and staff indoors during the school day.
  • School administrators monitor the situation through emergency alerts and information from Alberta Fire and other agencies. If we receive word the school community may be at risk due to proximity to the fire, the school will evacuate students and staff to a safe location.
  • Fultonvale Elementary Junior High, like all EIPS schools, has a detailed evacuation plan to follow should emergency officials inform us that we must leave. If that happens, EIPS will contact you directly via both phone and email on its emergency channel.
  • Staff and students will be transported via bus and taken to an emergency evacuation centre located a safe distance away, where a controlled release of students to their parents and caregivers will take place.

IMPORTANT: If you receive notice the school is evacuating, DO NOT come to the school to try and pick up your child. During an evacuation, staff must focus on ensuring all students are accounted for and safely on buses—they cannot manage the release of students from the school at the same time. Additional traffic and people coming to the school could also jeopardize the effectiveness of the evacuation and compromise the overall safety of the school community.

EIPS will keep parents informed of developments as they occur, including where the emergency evacuation centre is located and what the process for controlled student release will be. As well, there will be door signage at the school to direct parents and caregivers to the location of the evacuation site.

At EIPS, the safety of students and staff is our highest priority. I’m hopeful that knowing the school has a solid plan in place in the event of an emergency situation will contribute to peace of mind for the community.

Educational Assistant Appreciation Day is May 14!

On May 14, we recognize the dedication, hard work and compassion of educational assistants in our school community and across Elk Island Public Schools. Educational assistants play an integral role in education, from one-on-one student support to larger classroom dynamics. Thank you to all our educational assistants—you make a difference in the lives of students every day, and we are so grateful to have each one of you in our school.

This Educational Assistant Appreciation Day and beyond, we encourage students, families and staff to take a moment to tell an educational assistant how they’ve impacted you and to share your appreciation with them.

Did you know? - School Education Plans

Each school has a School Education Plan on its website. Annually, these plans are updated for the next school year to reflect schools’ goals, strategies and measures—all based on priorities found in the EIPS Four-Year Education Plan. School administration update their plans after reviewing school-specific results from the EIPS Annual Feedback Survey and consulting with staff, families and school councils in April. A School Education Plan helps a school community focus on what’s most important in its own specific context from year to year. To view your child’s School Education Plan, visit your school’s website and find the relevant home page block.
