April 28 Fire Wire

Happy Monday!

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for the parent volunteers in our school. The dedication and commitment to supporting our students and staff are truly remarkable and have not gone unnoticed.

The generosity in giving time and energy to our school community has made a significant difference in the lives of our students. From assisting in the classroom, to helping with school events, the contributions are invaluable and help to create a positive learning environment for our students.

On behalf of the entire school community, I want to extend my deepest gratitude for all our school volunteers. We look forward to hosting all who can join us Wednesday morning for coffee and muffins!

Once again, thank you for all that you do. Your efforts make a difference in the lives of our students, staff and school community.

It's a great week for a great week!

Proposed FSAC Bylaw Special Resolution

At Fultonvale School, we value transparency, collaboration, and the voices of our school community. As part of our commitment to ensuring the smooth operation and effectiveness of our Fultonvale School Advisory Council (FSAC), we are sharing an upcoming proposed bylaw change for your awareness and consideration.

What’s Being Proposed?
In accordance with FSAC bylaws, any amendments require a special resolution, which must be passed by a majority of not less than three-quarters of voting members present in person at a general meeting. Additionally, a minimum of 21 calendar days' public notice must be provided outlining the intent to propose such a resolution.
We are notifying our community of the following proposed amendment to the FSAC bylaws:
Current Bylaw Article 1, Section A.2 (Paid Elk Island Public School staff are eligible to be members in an advisory capacity only, without voting or Executive Committee privileges) will be deleted and replaced with the following wording:
"2. Elk Island Public Schools staff are eligible to be members in an advisory capacity but may only be extended voting or Executive Committee privileges if they work only on a casual, hourly basis for 20 hours or less per week."
This proposed revision aims to clarify and update the eligibility of EIPS staff members in terms of voting and executive roles within FSAC.

Next Steps
This special resolution will be presented and voted on at the next FSAC General Meeting, which will take place on Monday, May 20, 6:30 pm. We encourage parents and guardians to attend and stay informed. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

School Council AGM - Open Positions

Exciting News! Our AGM is coming up on May 20, 2025, and we have two important positions up for election!

We’re looking for dedicated individuals to step into the roles of:

  • Chair

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, make a difference, and help shape the future of our school community! If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to reach out to me ahead of time.

Important: To be elected, you must be present at the meeting on May 20.

Let’s build something great together!

School Supplies

The school supply lists for 2025-26 are now posted on our website - https://www.fultonvale.ca/about/school-supplies. We are currently working with Staples to create Staples Supply Lists which will be added to our website soon for 2025-2026.

If any families require support with school supplies, please contact our school office and we'll be happy to assist.

Important Reminders:

As we head into field trip season, please double-check your child(ren)’s schedules before placing lunch orders in advance.

Please log into your Healthy Hunger account to confirm your orders. We’ve had a number of students looking for lunches that weren’t ordered—we don’t want anyone disappointed!

Lunch Pickup for Siblings:
If you need your child’s lunch sent home with a sibling, please email Carrie at ceckersley78@gmail.com the day before, or by 9:00 AM on the day of hot lunch.
To help our volunteers manage lunch distribution efficiently, we ask that students do not come to the concession room looking for a sibling’s lunch. Carrie will ensure it’s delivered to the appropriate classroom to be taken home.

Thank you for your continued support of our hot lunch program and fundraising efforts.

Staff Recognition

Each day at Fultonvale, our amazing staff demonstrate Heart, Excellence, Attitude, and Teamwork, truly living out what it means to Feel the H.E.A.T. Their efforts leave lasting impacts on students and our school community, often in ways they may never even realize.

Let's take the time to celebrate them! If a staff member has made a positive difference for your child or family, we encourage you to share your appreciation. A few kind words can go a long way in brightening someone's day.

Submit a Staff Recognition Form here.

Thank you for helping us recognize the outstanding team that makes Fultonvale such a special place!

OPPORTUNITY

Class Placements

With registrations and the upcoming school year on our minds, we'd like to share information on how we determine classroom placements.

Our teachers collaborate with the administration and counsellor to develop balanced class lists as a team which consider several factors such as academic needs, behavioural needs, friendship/social groupings, access to support staff, matching personalities between teacher/student and a balance of genders. Teachers submit a checklist with each draft class list that addresses these considerations, including ensuring at least one friend for each student. As you can imagine, creating class lists is a complicated task.

It is our goal to create balanced classes that provide an excellent educational experience for each child. We appreciate your trust in our professionalism and our desire to do right by all students while balancing the various needs of each family. It is for that reason that we do not entertain requests for classroom placements. If there is an extenuating circumstance that will have a significant impact on your child or family that you feel we need to consider, you can share that information in writing via email to the principal, Jennifer Ference, by May 15, 2025.

Get ready for kindergarten - Save the Date

Do you have a child registered in kindergarten next year? If so, make sure to attend Fultonvale's upcoming Kindergarten Information Night on May 29. You’ll get to:

  • tour the school;
  • gain insight on play-based learning; and
  • see what a typical day looks like.

Kindergarten Information Night 2025:

  • Date: Thursday, May 29
  • Time: 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
  • Location: Fultonvale Elementary Junior High School

To make the transition to school as smooth as possible, Elk Island Public Schools has put together a toolkit for families. The kit includes information about registration, important dates, programming options, what to expect, eligibility, finding your designated school, transportation and more.

Mrs. Walker has published May's Counsellor Corner. This month it includes information about Mental Health Week which is held May 5-11. Mrs. Walker has also shared a new co-regulation strategy - a game that regulates the brain stem with patterned, repetitive, and somewhat rhythmic movements.  Resources and community programs through Mental Health and Addition News, AHS Parent and Caregiver Education and Strathcona County, including summer programming, are also included.

THANK YOU! Bus Driver Appreciation Day is May 5

Join us on May 5 as we recognize and thank our school bus operators for keeping the safety of our students their first priority. We encourage you, and your children, to take a moment to say thanks to our bus operators—who go above and beyond to provide safe and timely transportation to our students.

On behalf of THANK YOU to all of our school bus operators for a job well done.

A big THANK YOU to EIPS Volunteers

National Volunteer Week takes place April 27 to May 4. On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), I want to say a giant thank you to all EIPS volunteers. This year’s theme is Volunteers Make Waves, and that’s certainly true in our Division. No matter whether you’ve chaperoned a field trip, helped out at a hot lunch day or provided support in a classroom—every time you’ve stepped in a school—you’ve made a ripple effect that washes over your community. These waves of positivity, hard work and dedication build up and make a momentous impact on a student’s experience at school.

So, thank you again for being a part of our ocean at EIPS. The waves you’ve made—and will continue to create—all contribute to our collective goals of ensuring learning and working environments sustain student learning and amplifying the importance of public education in our province. This National Volunteer Week, I encourage everyone to celebrate the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hours put into supporting student growth and achievement at schools across the Division.

Chair, EIPS Board of Trustees
